What must constitute a record for bridge playing on board ship between any two Australian ports has just been estabilished on the B.l. steamer Janus in a tournament by the officers and saloon passengers. The contest was won by Mr. Pearless with a total of 5,192 points.

There were 14 entries.and the total points scored were 54,728 in 1,002 games. The tournament was played between Fremantle and Adelaide in four days. Each player played 71 games, and the average points scored amount to 3,909.

  December 16th - Early in the morning while alongside the wharf in Sydney, Janus's cargo caught fire. The cargo in #1 hold was well ablaze and producing large quantities of smoke when the fire brigade arrived which hampered their efforts to find the seat of the fire. The brigade had to use smoke helmets and were pouring 1,000 gallons of water a minute into the hold in an attempt to control it. Eventually the blaze was extinguished with no structural damage to the ship.
